Somaliland Improving Food Security with New Agricultural Scheme

The first harvest of cereals from an agricultural scheme aimed at boosting production and ensuring food security in Somaliland is finding its way into newly constructed grain silos.
Somaliland, which remains perennially food insecure, unveiled the 767-hectare schemes to grow a variety of crops such as wheat, millet, maize, beans and sesame several months ago
The seasonal emergency livelihood project which comprises three divisions is carried out in Tog-Wajale, Beir and Hahi localities.
It follows on from the recent severe drought, in which thousands were displaced and many lost their livelihoods.

Russia Negotiating with Somaliland Leaders for a Naval Base

Russia is reportedly negotiating with Somaliland leaders for a naval base to support its warships and submarines to operate in the region and the busy shipping lanes carrying most of Europe’s goods. If realised, this would be Russia’s first base in Africa since the Cold War and be a major step forward for Putin’s programme to revive Russia’s once proud navy. The base is expected to be home to two destroyer-sized ships, four frigate class ships, two large submarine pens, two airstrips that can host up to six heavy aircraft and 15 fighter jets.

Hargeisa-  In an effort of focusing on soil and water conservation the ministry of Agricultural development has dispatched members of its technical staff to Ethiopia to earn skills on the knowledge of combating soil erosion and desertification.

Earlier this month, Somalia’s parliament selected Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, a former prime minister, to be the country’s new president. Mohamed, known by his nickname, “Farmajo,” is popular among the army and is well-liked by the general public for his efforts to tackle corruption during his time as prime minister. In an email interview, Ken Menkhaus, a professor at DavidsoKen Menkhaus: We know Farmajo has support in parliament because it was the members of parliament who just voted him into office. The voting offers clues as to the extent of that support. In the first round of voting, which involved 21 presidential candidates, Farmajo actually came in second to the incumbent, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, trailing him with 72 votes against Mohamud’s 88.

25 Law Interns Complete a Seven-Months Training in Hargeisa



The Ministry of Justice, the High Judicial Commission of Somaliland and the UNDP UN-Multi Partner Trust Fund (UNMPTF) Rule of Law Joint Program held a graduation ceremony for 25 law interns (of which 7 are women) at the Ministry of Justice that was attended by the Minister of Justice, the Chief Justice, Director General of Ministry of Justice, the General Prosecutor, State Minister of Presidency and the head of the UNDP area office.

Premier Bank International Introduced New Service Called Automated Teller Machine (ATM) in Hargeisa, Somaliland



(Hargeisa:3 May 2016 -AlmisJournal) The Premier Bank International announced the launch of new service known as Automated Teller Machine (ATM) in Hargeisa, the capital city of Somaliland Republic. The service would be a convenience for Somaliland Diaspora and foreign visitors who want to use their debit and/or credit cards while they are in Somaliland.
Premier Bank is an international bank that deals with other banks in many countries around the world. The bank has been registered with Somaliland Central Bank, and has been given a permit to transact business within the country which would help the local businesses and international organizations manage easily their finances
